The Challenge
Texas’ population and economy are rapidly growing, and along with it the demand for water upstream of our coast. Today, our remarkable coastal wetlands and estuaries—critical ecological hotspots for hundreds of bird species and Texas’ commercial and recreational fisheries—receive far less freshwater during normal rainfall years and too little water to support healthy populations during drought.
The Opportunity
Coastal wetlands and estuaries are vital for local economies, generating several billion dollars each year in hunting, birding, and fishing revenues. By partnering with local organizations and landowners, we can implement win-win, market-based solutions that allow for conservation and restoration of flows and habitat in these critical regions.
The Impact
We and our partners have developed a growing body of data on how voluntary and market measures can help shape the health of coastal ecosystems across five counties. In 2025 alone, Texas Water Trade’s coastal work generated real, measurable impact, including support of 4,000 surface acres of seasonal wetland habitat, benefiting over 100 bird species, 13 of which are species of greatest conservation need.
